Orchestras are older ensembles than bands. They generally have more members than the latter, since on average the orchestras have between 75 and 100 musicians; however, there are also small orchestras. If an orchestra has less than 50 members it is called a “chamber orchestra”.

Another element that makes the difference between orchestras and bands is the type of music they play. Orchestras usually play classical music and typical symphonies that are written for orchestras. In spite of everything, today it is fashionable among some to play symphonic versions of songs or popular music.

Instruments played in orchestras also differ greatly from those played in bands. In the orchestras we can find: violins, violas, cellos, basses, trumpets, trombones, French horns, clarinets, oboes, flutes, military drums, cymbals and other traditional instruments.

Unlike bands, orchestras often play music in concert halls and theaters.

On the other hand, gangs are generally made up of two or more people; but not as many as in the case of orchestras . There are exceptional cases of bands composed of a single person (who plays the central role) while being accompanied by a small ensemble (commonly only in charge of playing instruments or doing the chorus). The marching bands are usually the ones with the largest number of members.

Unlike orchestras, bands play a wide variety of music, especially popular music (rock, pop, jazz, metal, punk); for this reason, they are often preferred by young audiences. In addition, the instruments most used by bands are the bass, guitar, drum, drums, keyboard, piano … although there are some that include a wide variety of instruments.

Finally, there are bands that fill larger venues than concert halls; however, these tend to occur in less “formal” settings.
