Difference Between Perfume and Cologne

Have you ever wondered why when you walk into a fragrance store some bottles say “perfume” and others say “cologne”? Do you think they are the same thing? First of all, it is important that you know that although they are similar; it is about different things that even their prices tend to differ. Difference Between Perfume and Cologne

Despite the differences between the two, it is a mistake to say that perfumes are for women and colognes for men. Both perfumes and colognes are fragrances worn by people of both sexes, only they are produced in different ways.

COLOGNE  Difference Between Perfume and Cologne

Cologne or Eau de Cologne is a fragrance or type of perfume. The term ‘colony’ has its origin thanks to the city of Cologne in Germany , where it was created.

Eau de Cologne was invented by Giovanni Maria Farina , a Carthusian monk; in the year 1790 . Thanks to the sale of this product in his shop, it quickly became popular with the crowd and also in all the royal houses of Germany.

The term “cologne” can be applied to both men’s and women’s fragrances. These fragrances are prepared with a mixture of essential oils (5-8% concentration), extracts (depending on the type of smell), alcohol and water.

FRAGRANCE

The term “perfume” originates in France (NOTE: only the term, because perfume already existed in other cultures before) and refers to a type of fragrance known to almost everyone, which was especially popular in the 16th century, after that the crusaders returned from the Middle East claiming that they had acquired the secret to making fragrances in Europe.

Perfumes are prepared by using aromatic compounds, which are mixed with ethanol or ethanol and water. As the concentration of aromatic oil increases, the more intense the perfume becomes and the smell of it stays longer. Generally, perfumes have a concentration of essential oil of about 30%.

In conclusion, perfumes and colognes differ greatly from each other in their intensity. The former usually remain in the body for a longer period of time, ranging from 6 to 8 hours. Due to the high concentration of essential oils.

On the other hand, the colonies generally remain for a shorter period of time: around 2 hours, because the concentration of essential oils is much lower; likewise, such concentration also contributes to the price difference between the two. The fragrances are usually much more expensive compared to the colonies. The different scents in the perfume and the cologne are the result of a mixture of natural and synthetic substances that is used to give a particular scent.
