Many people are confused with the terms “promise” and “commitment” and this confusion manifests itself at the moment of not knowing when a statement can be referred to as a commitment and when as a promise. Difference Between Promise and Commitment
Although there is a close relationship between the two concepts, the truth is that they are different things. If you also have doubts about it or just want a little more information, keep reading, because below we will explain what the difference between commitment and promise is.
When something is promised, a statement is made or it is assured that one is going to do something in particular or that it is going to cause something to happen. Promises are made to other individuals or groups of them.
It is quite common to make promises and have them made to us, but nothing more than a moral duty or the pleasure to be considered as people “by word” can push us to keep them or others to keep theirs for us.
Depending on the context, there are promises that are not made seriously and all parties involved are aware of this, however, other times more serious promises are made and with the intention of keeping them; although at the moment there is no means to make them come true.
A typical example of a promise is this: “I promise that one day my parents will be proud of me.” This statement indicates that the person who has made the promise will do something in particular to achieve his goal, although in the end he may not do anything and will not fulfill what he has promised.
On the other hand, unlike promises, commitments are characterized by being more concrete and because in some cases; when they are not fulfilled, they can carry various punishments (generally minor)
The commitment specifically includes carrying out the necessary actions to fulfill the promises that are made, therefore, whoever acquires commitments has to work and act according to what they have committed to.
Because commitments are generally much more serious than promises, it is sometimes not very easy to get rid of them. A typical example of commitment is that of the groom who tells his fiancée that he is going to marry her whenever he prefers. In this case, if the boyfriend were to change his mind, he could be considered as someone without a word or even as a bad person, depending on the context of the situation.
Finally, it can be said that promises come true or are kept when they are assumed as commitments. By themselves, promises are easily blown away; but the commitments that are assumed are more likely to be fulfilled.
