Difference between Refugee and Asylee

The terms refugee and asylee are similar in nature, since both are related to people who are forced to leave their home to move to another place in search of shelter; however, the similarities between these words end there because the truth is that they have different meanings.

If you have doubts about it or want to know a little more about the difference between asylee and refugee, keep reading, because we will detail it below.

REFUGEE

The word refugee refers to a person seeking shelter in a country other than their own due to fear of persecution for religious reasons, war , “race” or nationality. There are also other reasons why some people enter a country other than their own in search of refuge, for example, it could be due to natural disasters and political violence in their countries of origin.

Refugees cannot themselves guarantee the protection of another country, but in order that they can be relocated in a safer place, it is the other countries (especially bordering countries) that must want to provide them with the things they need.

ASYLEE

On the other hand, the term asylee refers to a person who cannot return to his country of origin for fear of being persecuted; But in this case, said person had to have applied for asylum in the country in which he or she is located and that is not his.

Political asylum cases are common, since in general the persecutions are of this type; although there are also frequent cases of religious, racist or group persecution in particular. In addition, due to differences of opinions, some individuals have been persecuted throughout history and have been forced to request asylum.

Finally, asylum is usually something requested by one or a few people at the same time, however, when it comes to refugees, the groups can be very large; even thousands of people.
