What is Tuna? Differences Between Tuna And Bonito

Tuna, also known by the scientific name of Thunnus, is a type of fish, which has approximately twelve different species.

It can be said that, within the world of sea fish, it constitutes one of the best known species. And it is that, it also has a strong presence in various cuisines, being Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia, the countries that consume the most this nutritious food.

Among the types of tuna, bluefin tuna, bluefin tuna, albacore tuna, and yellowfin tuna stand out.

Tuna Characteristics Differences Between Tuna And Bonito

Like any fish, tuna has various characteristics, among which we must first highlight the presence of two dorsal fins. On the other hand, this fish is fusiform, and has a sloping head with a small mouth.

As for the skin, it is hard and resistant; there are the scales, which are small and smooth, and are firmly attached to the skin.

Another important characteristic is that the tuna must be in constant motion so as not to sink, this due to the weight of its body, and to the very small swim bladder to allow it to stay afloat.

What is Bonito?

The Bonito, also known as Sarda Sarda, is a saltwater fish. Bonito is sometimes referred to as albacore tuna; in fact, it looks so much like a fish from the Thunnus family that many classify them as one of them. However, these two types of fish have their differences as we will see later.

Bonito characteristics

The bonito has on the back, between 7 and 10 longitudinal bands. On the other hand, its body is elongated and hydrodynamic. This shape allows your body to resist water during movement.

As for the color, the bonito is silvery blue, and on the belly it has certain iridescent reflections.

It should be noted that the bonito generally measures between 30-50 cm, and weighs 6-12 kg; however, these can measure up to 90cm and weigh up to 30 kilograms.

The bonito is a carnivorous fish that feeds on pelagic fish, these are the ones that live in waters close to the surface.

Finally, it should be mentioned that this fish is fished in the eastern Pacific Ocean, the tropical Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Australian coast.

Main differences: Tuna vs Bonito:

The first thing to note is that there is the bonito belonging to the “Sarda” family, and the northern bonito, which belongs to the tuna family. This is what generally confuses both fish, so it is important to relate their scientific names.

  • Weight can be the main difference between these fish, while bonito can weigh up to 30 kg, tuna can weigh 200 kg.
  • The meat of the tuna is reddish in color; For its part, the bonito has a much lighter color.
  • The fin of the tuna is much longer than that of the bonito.
