Difference between Authentic and Original

The adjectives “authentic” and “original” are often regarded as the same in their meanings, however, although it is true that they bear a certain relationship; it is also important to know that they do not mean the same thing. Not everything authentic is original and vice versa.

If you have doubts about it (we suspect you have them, since you are reading this for something), then we will explain what the difference between original and authentic is.

AUTHENTIC

The word “authentic” is used to refer to something that is reliable and has not been forged. It means that something is genuine, but this does not necessarily mean that it is also original (read on and you will find out why).

It is said that something is authentic when it has not been tampered with or subjected to processes that are not approved or regulated by any body or institution that is in charge of such work.

Especially when it comes to legal documents and papers , it is common for us to think of this word; since in these cases everything has to go according to the established rules.

The authentic is what has been approved and meets the requirements imposed. It is reliable because it meets all the standards that allow its approval.

Much importance is usually attached to the authentication of documents, papers and jewelry. When people think that these items are authentic, they place their trust in them and in the consequences that their possession will bring.

ORIGINAL

As its name implies, it has to do with the origin; first of its kind. When we say that something is original, we are saying that that something is the first of its kind and that it is not a replica of a previous one.

Replicas of an object may be authentic, but they are certainly not original; since the original object was the first to have been created.

Original things do not undergo changes and modifications over time, but are preserved as they have been from the beginning. Examples of this are some ancient monuments and writings.

Another example of something original is ourselves. Each one of us is unique and different from the others, there is no copy of each one and no one can be exactly the same as another. Therefore, something original is something unique and unrepeatable.

The original is real and the authentic is trustworthy. Both concepts do not refer to the same thing.

Key differences between original and authentic

  1. Original refers to something that is first of its kind, while authentic refers to something that complies with established regulations.
  2. The authentic is especially important when it comes to legal matters, while the original is more important when it comes to pieces of art .
  3. The authentic is reliable, while the original is true.
