Hear and listen, although they are usually considered synonymous; they certainly refer to different things. Can you hear a person but not hear them? Has it ever happened to you that while in class you heard what the teacher was talking about but you didn’t hear anything she said? Difference between Hearing and Listening
Hearing is one of the five senses and has to do with the ability to perceive sounds by detecting vibrations through that organ that we know as the ear.
In a hearing, the vibrations are detected by the ears of the listeners and then converted into nerve impulses that are sent to the brain. A person who does not have the ability to hear suffers from a condition known as deafness. Hearing occurs even when we are sleeping, as the ear continues to perceive sounds and transmit them to the brain.
Listen, also known as “active listening”; It is a technique used in communication that requires a person not only to hear, but to pay attention to the speaker and to be able to give feedback on the processed information.
Listening requires concentration, deriving meanings and reactions from the sounds that are heard. In the communication process, if the person does not listen; communication could be interrupted.
There are four types of communicators, the “not listening”, which is a person who only cares about his own thoughts and even if he is listening; don’t pay attention. The “passive listener” is the one who hears the words, but does not absorb their meaning and offers only vague responses. The “listener” listens and listens but only those conversations that really interest him; This is very common when in the middle of a conversation the person does not want to hear what someone who has a point of view different from theirs has to say. Finally, there is the “active listener”, this is the best type of listener; not only because he hears the person speak , but also because he listens patiently and with an open mind. He is always focused on what the speaker is saying.
It is said that a good listener becomes a better communicator when he understands the value of words and emotions, takes into account the importance of the clarity of words; To eliminate the possibility of misunderstandings and misinterpretation of ideas and words, it also collects the emotions that are connected with the words.
So the main difference between hearing and listening is that when you hear, it simply refers to the pickup of sounds that is made through the ear; while when listening, the message that arrives in the form of sounds is understood and interpreted. Listening is also used in the sense of being receptive to other people’s body language.
