Many believe that the terms “data” and “information” can be used interchangeably and mean the same thing. However, there is a subtle difference between the two.
The data can be a number, symbol, character, word, and if not put into context, the individual data means nothing to humans.
Humans use information in a meaningful way. A good example of information would be a computer. A computer uses programming scripts, formulas, or software applications to convert data into information.
Data | Information |
The data is disorganized raw facts that need processing without which it is seemingly random and useless to humans. | it is organized and processed data that is presented in a given context and is useful to humans. |
The data is a single unit containing raw material that has no specific meaning. | Information is a group of data that collectively has a logical meaning. |
it does not depend on information. | its usually depends on the data. |
It is measured in bits and bytes. | Information is measured in meaningful units such as time, quantity, etc. |
The data is never tailored to the specific needs of a designer. | Information is specific to expectations and requirements because all irrelevant facts and figures are removed during the transformation process. |
An example of data is a student’s test score | The mean score for a class is the information derived from the data provided. |
Data is the complete list of facts and details such as text, observations, figures, symbols, and description of things. It is the raw list of facts that are processed to obtain information. The basic concept of data is associated with scientific research collected by different research organizations.
It is the processed, organized and structured data. Provides context for the data. However, both terms are used together, It can be easily understood than data.
In simple terms, we can conclude that data is disorganized descriptions and facts from which information can be extracted.
Data is raw, disorganized and unprocessed information. For example, the information collected to write a research paper is data until it is presented in an organized way.
It is the processed and organized data that is beneficial in providing useful insights. For example, data collected in an organized way in a research article provides information about a particular concept.
Valid information is something that is reliable. Information that has been verified and verified for a purpose is valid information.
