The main reason why we develop language skills is to express ourselves, but there are different ways of expression and many times we can use concrete concepts; but also abstract concepts. Following this same line, below we explain the difference between abstract language and concrete language.

In this way it is called the use of language that is done to express concepts that involve a series of ideas and meanings that can only be understood when they are examined more deeply.

Abstract concepts are those that refer to elements that cannot be experienced or felt only using the five senses.

When we use abstract language we always refer to intangible things that can only be understood, not felt. Everyone may have different ideas or opinions about abstract concepts.

Some of the most important abstract concepts are: love, hate, time, freedom, success, moral. The definition of these can vary even depending on the age of the person.


On the other hand, we speak of concrete language when concepts are expressed that in reality can be experienced; that is, they can be captured through the senses.

Some concepts that belong to the concrete language are: chair, spoon, table-bed; among others. Normally, when using concrete language, there are usually no problems when defining concepts, because they always have the same definition and do not depend on what each person understands.

Key differences between concrete and abstract language

  • With concrete language we use concepts of things that can be felt or experienced in our lives, while in the case of using abstract language we express ideas and thoughts.
