BANANA

The word banana has an Arabic root and this fruit is believed to be native to India or Malaysia. The plant (which is a herb, not a tree) from which this fruit is derived belongs to the Musaceae family.

The reason why the plant, both banana and plantain, is considered an herb is because it does not have a concise stem. This plant has very large leaves and together they resemble a trunk.

Bananas have an elongated shape and when they are suitable to be eaten as fruit, their skin is yellow. Inside the skin or peel, the mass of the bananas is soft and stands out for its sweetness and fragility.

Plantain tree

Like bananas, Plantain tree also belong to the Musaceae family. To be more precise, most of today’s bananas are a combination of the muse acuminata and the muse balbisana.

Plantain tree look a lot like bananas, but they are longer than bananas. The thickness of the peel is also a distinctive element, that of bananas is much thicker.

Plantain are generally eaten raw when ripe; however, plantains in most cases are cooked when they are still green or eaten raw when they are overripe.

When bananas are cooked, their skin also turns yellow. They lose some of the starch, causing the flavor to become a little sweeter. When fully ripe, the peel turns completely black.

During cooking, bananas retain their shape; while bananas often do not keep it, because they get too soft.

The sugar and humidity are higher in the bananas bananas. The latter have a higher proportion of meat compared to bananas.

Note: in some countries where the consumption of bananas is not very common, bananas are also called plantains.

Differences between plantain and banana

  1. Bananas are generally eaten raw when ripe, while bananas are usually cooked while they are still green and are only eaten raw when very ripe.
  2. Compared to bananas, bananas are longer.
