Difference Between Volume and Density
Both volume and density are scientific concepts that refer to the physical properties and characteristics of matter. These terms often describe the qualities or properties of a given object. Both concepts are usually found in the field of physics and both act as measurement tools for three-dimensional objects. But these terms can be applied during three stages or states of matter, which are; solid, liquid and gaseous. Difference Between Volume and Density
DENSITY Difference Between Volume and Density
Density is defined as mass per unit volume. In short, the concept refers to the amount of matter or mass that an object possesses within the space it occupies. It also describes the relationship between the mass of an object and its volume.
Density is symbolized by the letter “D” and is a scalar magnitude of matter. The formula is D = M / V, or density equals mass divided by volume. This formula only applies to objects with uniform compositions or solid objects. But from this same formula, with some adjustments, the formula for mass and volume can be derived. In experiments, mass is often determined before volume.
Density is measured in the following units: pounds per cubic foot, grams per cubic centimeter, and kilograms per cubic centimeter.
Different substances have different densities, due to this fact; This property of matter can be used to determine whether a certain sample or substance is authentic or not. Density can change or vary when temperature or pressure is applied.
VOLUME
Volume, on the other hand, is a component of density. As a property, volume refers to the amount of space that a particular object occupies. It is represented by the letter »V». In the search for density, volume is one of two key components along with mass.
In a three-dimensional object, the volume of the shape can be determined by multiplying the dimensions, which are part of the object’s length, width, and height. Some specific shapes, such as cube, cylinder, prism, rectangular prism, pyramid, cone, circle and others; They have specific formulas to determine their volume.
For liquids and gases, the substances in the sample are put into a container and their volume is calculated. This is expressed in units and subunits as cubic meters for solid substances and cubic liters for liquids and gases.
They are inversely related to each other. If one increases, the other on decreases.
Key differences
- The higher the density, the smaller the volume; while the higher the volume, the lower the density.
- Density is represented by the letter “D” and volume by “V”.
- D is the amount of mass found in a certain volume of a substance, while V refers to the space that the material body occupies.
